DNTemple Latest Updates

Postby Sterex on Sat May 17, 2008 9:06 am

There have been major changes in the way DNBucks are earned and also, there are new rules that will come into effect from the 17th of May, 2008.

1. DNBucks update:
Henceforth, the amount of DNBucks earned for a new topic (thread) created will be on par with the amount earned with every post (reply). This decision has been taken after noticing the board being flooded with *orphaned* topics. Orphaned meaning, the member who creates the thread no longer wants to take part in the discussion and more often than not creates such threads only to take the benefit of the higher DNBucks earned for creating a thread when compared to a post. Such orphaned topics destroy the ideology of a discussion forum and discourages other members too. This was especially seen in the Free Web Hosting section where the admins and moderators have spent literally hours cleaning the orphaned topics. (The new rules address this issue too; explained later on)

Thinking logically as well, there was no reason to for a topic to earn more than a post. Because, both good topics as well as posts add to the discussion. Moreover, members are welcome and encouraged to donate a part of their DNBucks to the owner of a thread if they find it helpful.

Changes overview

DNBucks earned in the old system:
Every new topic = 10
Every new post = 5

DNBucks earned in the new system:
Every new topic = 5
Every new post = 5

What this means to an average member:
If you are a responsible member at DNTemple, this change should not put you off in any way. This change may ire those members who have always taken advantage of the higher topic earning versus the post earnings. This was inevitable to create a healthy discussion environment here at DNTemple.

2. New (per forum) Rules:
Another change that will come into effect is the per-forum rules which you'll have to follow while posting a topic or a post in that particular forum. These rules will be made visible when you visit the specific forums and will hold good only to that forum.

For instance, the new rules for the Free Web Hosting forum are as follows:
  • You are allowed to create a new topic here only if you have tried the web hosting service and you honestly recommend it to other members, or in case you want an opinion of other members before you choose a particular webhost.
  • You are required to search the forum for duplicate topics before you create a new one.
  • Anyone posting a large number of free web hosting offers, just for the sake of making DNBucks will be banned!

New rules for the other sections of the forums will also be added at a later date, and notified appropriately.

What this means to an average member:
As again, if you are a responsible member at DNTemple, these rules do not change anything for you.

All members are requested to conform to these updates. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

well i really agree with you here. The freeweb hosts section was a spammers haven, and i really like the idea that you have to use the host before, some people were just copying and pasting over 100 free web hosts in a day :( I also have a suggestion, can the free/paid webhosts sections have a review section for people to review hosts? because I sometimes do that and that way it is eiser to find good web hosts. And maybe the review would have to be atleast the lengh of a paragrath, if not 2.

Thats a very wise step in deed. That will certainly control the spam in the free websites section.
Great step and hopefully it will bring greater quality posts to DNtemple

Ah wonderful! I think the new rules for posting is better! Now we will see less spam and also we will hardly see any double topics that members keep posting!

Also for the Website Critiques and Reviews should have new rules! Many members just post "nice site" "cool site" and so on! We should use a form! Like

Layout:
Content:
Activeness:
Overall:

Something like that or more better! We just need to stop all the spamming in the forums!

Anyways I agree with Sterex I like the new rules and doesn't affect me in anyway.

This could be good step and very bad step, because I see another problem ... There is no one online except me and spiders. This step could decrase the forum activity. Am I right? :?

Could you please explain as to how this could be a potential bad move?

Well marton, we have an average of 100 people who visit the forum everyday (sometimes this number goes up to 336 - the highest until now), but let's just be a little pessimistic with the figures for the moment. Let's say, out of the hundred, there are like 20 bots? With only Yahoo!, Google and MSN bots, even this figure is a bit too high. Out of the remaining 80, let's say 20 of them are guests, people who just come to the forum and go; without registering or posting.

Now we have 60 'members' visiting the forum everyday. And thats a pretty decent number if you ask me. And as a fact, we have an average of 126 replies posted everyday. As per your query, its not the number of members concurrently present with you that matters because, people who visit DNTemple are spread across the globe and they access the website at their convenient times. And I don't think the updates have anything to do with forum activity.

That is a very nice number, but don't you think that forum where are domains free should have much more. I believe so. But anyway this is very nice success. :)

It should be more! The forum is what the community is. And a community is what the members are. So the success or the failure of any community is because of its members. One way to increase the popularity of DNTemple is give us link backs from your website and refer more people. :-)

Very good rules indeed! I would like to make a suggestion here... It would be better if DNBucks were awarded only for posting in particular useful forums and not awarded for posts in useless forums... I could help DNTemple with this... I'll talk to DNMaster tonight about this, whether he wants me to implement such a check. This is nothing new and is simply similar to the idea that post count is not incremented in some forums. (DNTemple forum has all the forums set to increment post count so not directly evident here, but earlier with the phpBB plus forum based on phpbb2, there used to be forum sections which wouldnt earn DNBucks.)

Couldn't talk to DNMaster tonight, it seems he's offline. Will try to contact tomorrow. Sterex, if you have any implementation idea regarding the script, you can let me know, so that it would help in tweaking the script faster.

I'm confident that DNMaster would definitely implement something like this sooner or later, so guys, I think this check is coming soon.

how about you get paid per character? that way a tiny, 4 word post would only get like 0.5 DN$? lol that would lower spam rates by ALOT! but you'd have to make quotes not count cuz it would be a waste then and people would cheat

There is no need of any extra scripting Tiger. :-) The system provides us with enough options. :-)

cool, i didn't see this thread before. 5 dnbucks per for a topic is good enough for me. after all, it will help decrease the spamming.... hopefully, lol. i don't make many threads anyways, unless i need to. also, i did see that people are mostly kinda getting free hosting offer from some other sites and just making a new thread for each site listed. that is just like copy and paste. what would be the quality of the hosts if you just post a random host, lol. i hope these rules will help!
