.es Domain Names and the Secondary Market

Following liberalisation of the .es ccTLD, there were 800,000 .es domain names registered in 2007, and for the first time more .es domain names were registered than .com domain names says Sedo in a Spanish article on domain names.

The demand for registering .es domain names is following through into the aftermarket with prices going higher and higher with Sedo sales of .es domain names tripling in 2007. The average price of a .es domain name in 2007 was US$4,600. The highest Sedo sale of a .es domain name was viajes.es that sold for $97,500 while viajes.com sold for $300,000. However the name of the highest sale of a .es domain name cannot be revealed due to a confidentiality agreement, but the price can - $180,000.

The highest sale of a domain name in the Spanish language was trabajo.com, which sold for $370,000. However there were some unique conditions attached to this sale – the sellers wanted a paid for trip with expenses to the Boston branch of Sedo to meet those involved in the sale of the domain name. Another quirky sale was that of gibraltar.com, which sold to a resident of Malaga for $360,000 who wanted to reclaim the rocky island for Spain, although only in virtual form.

The above was translated from sedo.com/links/showhtml.php3?Id=1643&tracked=&partnerid=35425&language=es. If there are any corrections to note, please let us know.

I like the domain because alot of words end in es and you could make some nice domains with it. I also would like to know where they can be registered.

So, what exactly is the big thing about .es? Does it stand for something? Or are they really expensive?

.es is the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Spain. It is administered by the Network Information Center of Spain.

Registrations are permitted at the second level or at the third level beneath various generic second level categories. Some qualifications and restrictions apply to third-level registrations depending on which second-level domain they are within. Second-level registrations have had some limitations including requiring registrants to have a connection with Spain, but these restrictions were lifted in a multi-stage process completed by the end of 2005, at which point registrations at the second level of .es were open to anybody worldwide.

Oh, ok. So it is sort of a hard to get because the government sells them. So, like .ca is Canada's country code TLD?

Mostly the name you want is not available in .com
.es is a good alternative.
