Best practices for a new install of WordPress.

Postby pebbleworm on Wed Aug 27, 2008 6:55 am

Alright, we've succesfully installed WordPress. Now what? :D

Here's a list of the first 5 things we ought to do:

1. Change the password to something we can remember.

2. Change the tagline.

3. Change the time zone.

4. Customize the permalink structure.

5. Activate Akismet.

I never really fully understood Akismet. What exactly does it do?

What is akismet? Is it important? Also what do you mean by the tagline?

Tag line = "just another WordPress blog."

Akismet = anti-spam plugin. Catches comment spams for you.

A really good, free, anti-spam system that you really should install. ;)

I have actually seen WordPRess blogs who didn't turn-on their permalinks. Their owners found out too late that they have to turn it on BEFORE making any post.

Never used wordpress, so its a bit of knowledge for me, is turnning permalink off like making No follow, i.e no backlinks from comments?

Turning on permalinks in WP makes the URL human-readable instead of the usual letters and numbers like p=12345.

I think it is known in Joomla as SEO-friendly URL.
