Affiliate/ Referral Links

Postby dramaprincessxox on Wed Aug 20, 2008 2:24 pm

What do you think makes visitors turned off by affiliate id's? What causes them to remove the id from a link before visiting an affiliate website? And are you annoyed by affiliate and referral links?

I think that maybe some visitors consider you greedy for trying to make money through affiliation or referrals. It's not reasonable, really, but some people are like that and will do anything to avoid letting the site owner earn from the link.

The use for an affiliate link? The person who referred you gets something for referrring you. You get to visit a site which is useful to you.

There are two reasons that I know of. One is when you just don't like the person the link is coming from. The second is because people feel like they are forced to help you, even if they plan to sign up for the service anyway. So to get rid of that feeling, they get rid of the refid.

I've never deleted the referral ID as this means a lot for them. Don't be cruel and unkind, because they put it there to get benefits from it.

Clicking on an affiliate referral link will not hurt you.

thankfully though most affiliate sites also use a cookie, though that can also be easily deleted.

Here's how affiliate links work...

It's like selling Avon products. When people sell an Avon cologne to us for $10.00, Avon gives them $2.00 (only an example as I know nothing about Avon products, actually). When we buy the cologne directly from an Avon store, the price is still $10.00 and Avon keeps all of the money (to pay for the store space and sales persons, perhaps). But the point is, it doesn't really matter if we buy them from an affiliate or Avon store, since we're still paying $10.00.

Same with affiliate programs, if we take off the affiliate ID and go directly to the home page, we don't really save money. Fact, we are only making that company richer and probably depriving a hardworking online entrepreneur of his/her chance to make a few bucks, not even enough to buy a portobello burger.

Online companies pay affiliates a commission for a very important reason, they help promote the product. It's not easy to do that. We usually have to put up a site, add some content, and promote it.

These online companies pay these commission from their own pockets. If we don't use the affiliate ID's they'll be happier because it means more money for them and less for us webmasters and online entrepreneurs.

For those banking on affiliate programs to earn a few bucks. It's not a simple process of setting up a site and plastering the content with affiliate IDs. We need to establish a presence in a niche first since a loyal readership is more likely to buy a product or register for a service under our affiliate links.

There are affiliate links that I don't like either and they are usually on sites that are obvious click-traps.

Thanks.

If you're blog is really interesting and gets a lot of traffic then you should have at least one referral.

Can I get a link to your blog.

Here is a nice trick with aff URLs its usefull with clickbank URLs so you get the money that you deserve and not some other guy. Go to tinyurl.com and simply turn your aff url into a tiny url that can't be easily altered. Most people won't mind clickin on a link that they have no clue is really an aff link but isn't misrepresented to look like something else. Would you belive that some webmasters actually paid for a program to protect their aff links when it can be done for free, the method they often buy is a javascript link encrypter or usually an encoder which can be blocked by proxies and browsers.
