DNTemple | Discuss Domains, Webhosting and Webdesign

Hi this is my very first post on this forum, (found it thanks to designstudio's blog.)

When you load the site the very first time, it can be confusing for anyone interested in DNtemple . This is because soon as you start, you are plunged into an unknown forum with no guidance.

Many forum based communities use something called a portal for their forums.
A portal is like "a home page" for a forum; which acts to display some key features.
- the description of the site
- new members
- TOS
- and many other key things which clarify what the site is about, especially for new users.

A picture speaks a 1000 words so I'll post a picture of a portal I found...


As you can see, all the key features are on the first page. For DNtemple, I think it would be good to post DNtemple's mission and views on the portal page rather than people having to find it somewhere in the forums. Same goes for rules, TOS and points system.

What do you think of this idea?

Phpbb3 (the forum system used on this site) is fairly new but a particularly good portal system is available which has even more addons such as a wiki, mini-knowledge base, downloads section, etc. Its called phpbb3 portal, check it out sometime. I think the actual site is down for a while but there are external reviews and download sites). Da Mysterious's portal is even better I think.

Good idea actually,

At first when i saw the website, my friend told me they give free domains, so when i came here i saw that they said Dicuss domains etc.., so i thought it was wrong, i saw in the announcements and it said domain shop opened and all that, so i thought maybe you have to register a domain thorugh them, but then i saw " the best rewarding domain forum on the web ", that is why i stayed and asked questions and finally found it out.

Yeah same here. I thought I was tricked into visiting a site with such an offer.

I had to hunt through the forums to find the relevant information.

Hmm.. We have had these suggestions before. I guess its a pretty good idea too. We'll see what we can do about it. Thanks. Keep the thinking hats on!

I like the idea. I think it would be cool, especially if they had the shoutbox on the main page now also in the portal. Cool idea. It could have polls and stuff. Give the members a little bit more to do.

I would also like to see this idea come thorugh, and robert added some extra ideas too, very nice, polls would be nice, and yes inforation should be put there

Thats the website it comes from. You can go there to explore all the features of the portal.

I had the damysterious portal installed on one of my sites. I really liked it. The only drawback is you are pretty much stuck with prosilver theme. He might have some themes ported over by now, I am not sure.

Thats true davinci, but after all, this site is pretty much using the prosilver theme anyway... just a bit greener.

I don't think he has released any themes though, as you correctly pointed out.

Skinning a portal isn't too difficult. It is almost as simple as skinning the PHPBB..

I'm not sure if thats the case for DaMysterious though.

I don't know that much about skinning but I guess you (or whoever) could do it. Personally I like the phpBB3 design as is... don't particularly like the green.

We had a portal with phpBB2. We're keeping tabs on the phpBB3 portal. We're not adding anything until they're pretty stable as we had some unsavory experiences with betas and RCs before. Thanks.

Anyways, if anybody takes the time to get to know DNtemple, they'll be rewarded. If somebody's in a hurry, there are always other domain forums.
